Action for Animals (APA) Mission and Vision

Our mission is to offer lifesaving programs and services to rescue at-risk companion animals in Doña Ana County and support people and their pets in living healthy and happy lives together. We envision a time when all companion animals in our community are treated with respect and kindness.

Since May 2012, we have rescued more than 6,800 animals.

The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from our municipal shelter.

We can do this through the tireless work of our staff, foster families, and volunteers, and because of the support of our donors. The APA Adoption and Education Center is located at 537 N. Solano Dr. and is open Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday from 11 to 4 and by appointment at 575-644-0505.

Info line:  575-644-0505; adoption center:  575-571-4654; e-mail:  mail@apalascruces.org.

We had a sad day today when our vets and executive director made the decision to let Pickles go. The poor baby was full of poop again, and her suffering was eminent.
Our vet said there are many possible reasons why Pickles' anatomy did not operate correctly:
*Pelvic fracture with excess scar tissue occluding the pelvic canal
*Nerve damage from early injury, including during birth
*Defect in formation of pelvic nerves
All are hard to prove, but the end result was Pickles developed a megacolon that would not resolve. And our sweet kitty was not going to survive it.
Our executive director was with Pickles at the end. She held our baby in the last minutes of her life. And the decision and outcome were terribly sad. We so wish Pickles had made it. All the baby did was play and purr--to the very end. 😿 Rest in peace, Pickles. 🙏🐾🙏

Please tune in tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. with our friends at Hot 103 and our amazing host, Monica, for our Pet-of-the-Week (POW). We are featuring Sly, a former Southern New Mexico PAWS graduate who was returned recently, went back for a training refresher. He's a mellow, 8-year old guy who wants a quiet home to spend the rest of his days.
And we continue to promote the need for more APA Recurring Donor Heros. We HONESTLY need the support of many more in our community to continue our lifesaving work in DAC and avoid possible emergency operations or intake freezes, etc. It's stressful always being one disaster away from these dire conditions. 😞

Sweet little Watson joined our dedicated volunteer, Kandy, last week to visit the nice people at Haciendas at Grace Village. Kandy and one of our dogs visit the residents in four buildings each Tuesday afternoon to share doggy cheer and love.
🐾💙🐾
We got Watson from the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley recently. He's about 1 year old and is ready to find his furever home.

Adoption Follow-up Monday features APA alum Leslie. This sweet boy came to us as a kitten last year with his left eye literally coming out of its socket. We pulled him from the municipal shelter, and our special-needs foster took care of him through surgery and recovery.
We couldn't tell his gender, so we gave him a non-gender specific name. His adopter kept the name, and now Leslie is a fully grown cat with a loving home. We were so happy to see the handsome young man he's become. 😻🐾💙🐾😻

APA is working hard to help our municipal shelter and community become a No Kill success story. We pull animals from the shelter when we have space.
The programs and services we offer are the Pet Food Bank, P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success), a prison-dog training program, and our adoption center, where cats/kittens/dogs are cared for 24/7/365 until adopted. We care for up to 100 animals in our building.
