Action for Animals (APA) Mission and Vision

Our mission is to offer lifesaving programs and services to rescue at-risk companion animals in Doña Ana County and support people and their pets in living healthy and happy lives together. We envision a time when all companion animals in our community are treated with respect and kindness.

Since May 2012, we have rescued more than 6,800 animals.

The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from our municipal shelter.

We can do this through the tireless work of our staff, foster families, and volunteers, and because of the support of our donors. The APA Adoption and Education Center is located at 537 N. Solano Dr. and is open Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday from 11 to 4 and by appointment at 575-644-0505.

Info line:  575-644-0505; adoption center:  575-571-4654; e-mail:  mail@apalascruces.org.

We have an UPDATE on the cat abandoned at our entrance yesterday morning when we were closed ... her name is Heaven. But, she's in distress right now and far from feeling at peace.
Only staff, using bite gloves, are opening her condo to feed and water her plus keep her space as clean as possible. Our top priority is to give her space and time while avoiding her scratching or biting anyone. Her vaccines are outdated, and she'd have to go to the shelter for a bite quarantine. And this poor cat has been through enough already.
We only had space in our sick ward. Because she was chipped, we figured out who she is as well as who the woman is who illegally abandoned her.
Another rescue here had been helping the woman and her cat since the latter was a kitten. They vaccinated and microchipped the cat. And they have offered to take the cat many times and would have done so yesterday. We will hopefully transfer the cat to them when she can be safely handled.
We have the luxury of time now because we aren't as full as we will be by next month. We would only send the cat to the ASCMV when we are full with no space anywhere. At the height of kitten season, we will get to that point.
Lastly, Animal Control was contacted, and the abandonment report was filed. We will always report cruel abandonment. It's illegal for a reason. The AC officer gathered information today from us and the other rescue.
And Telemundo 48 El Paso came by to interview and visit with us. We'll share that story when it's available.

At 9:23 this morning when we were closed, a woman dumped a cat at our door. Animal abandonment is illegal and cruel, and we report it to the authorities to hold people accountable. If anyone can help identify the woman in this video/pictures, please privately contact our manager at 575-644-0505.

APA is working hard to help our municipal shelter and community become a No Kill success story. We pull animals from the shelter when we have space.
The programs and services we offer are the Pet Food Bank, P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success), a prison-dog training program, and our adoption center, where cats/kittens/dogs are cared for 24/7/365 until adopted. We care for up to 100 animals in our building.
