Action for Animals (APA) Mission and Vision

Our mission is to offer lifesaving programs and services to rescue at-risk companion animals in Doña Ana County and support people and their pets in living healthy and happy lives together. We envision a time when all companion animals in our community are treated with respect and kindness.

Since May 2012, we have rescued more than 6,800 animals.

The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from our municipal shelter.

We can do this through the tireless work of our staff, foster families, and volunteers, and because of the support of our donors. The APA Adoption and Education Center is located at 537 N. Solano Dr. and is open Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday from 11 to 4 and by appointment at 575-644-0505.

Info line:  575-644-0505; adoption center:  575-571-4654; e-mail:  mail@apalascruces.org.

Sometimes people don't understand all the unknowns we take on pulling very sick and injured dogs from the municipal shelter ... some turn out to be VERY hard to place. A recent example is Miracle.
She was on death's door, but when she recovered, we found out she's not good with other dogs. That is what happens after years of neglect and zero socialization from the formative puppy age. Now she needs a lot of work or an only dog home.

Our kitten intakes are insane right now. It's hard to turn away kittens about to be put down for treatable illnesses like calicivirus. But, we are now at capacity in both our sick and ringworm wards.
It costs us $200+ to fully vet each kitten prior to adoption or transport. We treat all illnesses and vaccinate and microchip and alter each baby. Last year, we were able to save 150+ more of these lives because we transported them to Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center.
This added close to $30K more to our annual vet care expenses. And we honestly can't afford to keep up this rate of lifesaving without vastly more support.
People ask us what we need the most. And the honest answer is MORE sustaining donors. APA Recurring Donor Heroes help us be constant heroes to at-risk animals. And the need for our services is still overwhelming.

Stella, left, and Sly are in a foster home together. This foster is wonderful but cannot adopt them because of too frequent work travel. They foster the two when they are in Las Cruces.
Stella and Sly are older, mellow dogs. They are both graduates of our Southern New Mexico PAWS prison training program.
Stella has bad allergies most easily managed with monthly Cytapoint vaccines. We are willing to cover the cost of them for her adopter. And--it would sure be great to find these two sweet older dogs a home together. 🐾💙🐾❤️🐾

APA is working hard to help our municipal shelter and community become a No Kill success story. We pull animals from the shelter when we have space.
The programs and services we offer are the Pet Food Bank, P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success), a prison-dog training program, and our adoption center, where cats/kittens/dogs are cared for 24/7/365 until adopted. We care for up to 100 animals in our building.
