ACTion Programs for Animals (APA)

Adoption and Resource Center

At our center, we feature dogs, cats, and kittens we have available for adoption. All our rescues are from Doña Ana County—either from the municipal shelter or community members. We also offer scanning of dogs/cats who have been found, though we cannot intake strays here. We do not have the space nor local government funding to support that service. However, we offer information and advice/resources about animal-related questions/issues either in person or by phone/e-mail.

Pet Food Bank

APA distributes pet food to Doña Ana County residents on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. at 537 N. Solano. The distributions are operated by a group of committed volunteers, and we thank them for their service!

To start the program, you just need your ID. We will explain our services and the requirements. They are different depending on whether a person is going to use them temporarily or long-term.

To date, we have distributed more than 1 million pounds of food and pet supplies–such as collars, leashes, dog houses, and brushes/combs–to thousands of needy families. The average pounds per month we distribute is 10, 000, and we help approximately 50 families per week.  We have been operating the pet food bank since 2009; it was our pilot program.

APA also provides food to small rescues and other agencies that serve no- to low-income populations. We have helped The Community of Hope, Las Cruces Meals on Wheels, and La Casa. We are always seeking similar partnerships with other organizations as well.

P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success)

Southern New Mexico PAWS

We took over the administration of the P.A.W.S. prison program in 2016 in partnership with the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. We have sent hundreds of dogs to this program for rehab and training, and people often ask us specifically for these dogs. We can save many more dogs from the shelter, especially larger ones, because of this wonderful program. You can adopt a fully trained dog at a very reasonable adoption fee. They are obedience-trained, crate-trained, and house-trained. Visit the Southern NM Paws Facebook page at:
